What is a meditation coach & what actually happens in a meditation coaching session?
A meditation coach is the way it sounds. It’s someone who’s able to teach others how to meditate as well as guide others in realizing their true self.
Meditation coaching combines the practices of meditation, healing, and coaching. A meditation coaching session might use any combination of these modalities.
Incorporating meditation as a part of the coaching process allows you to more easily access your own intuition and inner-knowing. In this space, answers to questions and next steps may arise easily. Meditation also creates a natural space for healing to occur in which feelings or memories may arise and be released so new energy and experiences can come through.
Meditation coaching is based on the understanding that each person has access to their own answers and inner-knowing. A Meditation coach’s job is to facilitate the space for you to access that knowledge.
You may use your sessions to explore and develop your own meditation practice or for coaching on any area where you would like to focus in your life. Sessions may focus on topics in your personal or professional life and frequently may bridge between the two.
What topics are appropriate to bring to a meditation coaching session?
You can bring any question or situation that you think could benefit from focused attention, any area of your life that feels stuck, or any goal or intention that you want to move forward in. It’s OK to show up to a session without any coaching topic, but sessions are client-driven so you will generally get the most out of your session if you have a sense of the focus for the session.
A few places you might start in considering coaching topics are:
• What thought loops have you found yourself in?
• What has been weighing heavily on you?
• What goals are you working toward?
• What is an area of your life that doesn’t feel good right now?
• How do you want to feel instead?
• What intentions have you set for yourself?
Useful coaching topics can vary depending on what’s relevant and real for you. A coaching topic might be as big as, “I want to leave my job and start my own business within the next year,” or as small as “I know I need to clean out my closet, and I just can’t figure out why I haven’t done it already—it’s really bugging me!” What we find is that the blocks and resistance that show up in any area of life will tend to arise in multiple areas. Working with the small daily obstacles that show up can begin to make shifts in the big picture over time. Sometimes we also simply need to be witnessed exactly where we are at a moment in time.
What kind of healing happens in a meditation coaching session?
Meditation and coaching calls attention to the areas of your life that you are currently stuck at or where you’re experiencing resistance. As you bring these areas into your awareness, they are able to release which can lead to strong waves of feelings, emotions, or new awareness. By creating space for these feelings to pass through, you are able to heal the blockages, restore a sense of flow, and start living feeling more states of zen.
